Your initial consultation

Please bring along any relevant blood test results or MRI, scans or x-ray reports.

You will be asked to complete a comprehensive case history form, so please arrive about 15 minutes early. The intake form asks questions about your current state of health, past illnesses, and family history. These questions are important because the holistic approach of Oriental medicine, it takes everything into account. Your current symptoms may not seem related to past health issues, but our bodies are complex landscapes and everything that has happened can leave a blueprint on your health today.

After reviewing your intake form, expect to be asked other questions about your condition. This will be followed by checking your pulse, tongue, and palpation of tender reflexes, these are the diagnostic methods of Oriental medicine. A skilled practitioner taking a comprehensive case history can have insights that help you understanding what is going on with your health. The first consultation typically includes an acupuncture treatment, but for more complex and chronic conditions your first visit may be focused on obtaining a complete case history and working out a treatment plan. 

Recommendations may include lifestyle changes, relaxation techniques, healthy eating suggestions, exercises, Chinese herbs  and nutritional supplements. These are important adjuncts to support your acupuncture treatment and part of the holistic framework that is  unique to Chinese Medicine.

In your treatment carefully selected acupuncture points are inserted usually gentle Japanese needling techniques. Once inserted, you are left to lie comfortably for 15-20 minutes with the needles in place. Many people find acupuncture treatment deeply relaxing, and it is not uncommon for patients to fall asleep during this time.
